Is the Moon a upside down?

In Week 6 of Term 2 our class focussed on how to write great explanations.
We wrote about the Moon’s different phases as we are in the middle of learning about Planet Earth and Beyond. Learning how to write a great explanation will help us with our self-guided topics in a few weeks time. Here is my writing, after I have self-assessed and peer-assessed my work.

My Information Report Success Criteria:
Self
Peer
My heading:

  • is the question WHY DOES THE MOON LOOK DIFFERENT EVERY NIGHT?

My opening paragraph/introduction:

  • introduce what my writing is about in a clear way

  • hooks the reader

  • clear topic sentence and supporting sentences

  • 2-3 sentences maximum

My main paragraphs/body paragraphs:

  • clear topic sentence and supporting sentences

  • are organised so that each paragraph is about a different aspect of the subject

  • give detailed information (factual descriptions)

  • include specific, technical vocabulary

  • are generally balanced (have a similar amount of detail about the different aspects I write about)

  • connectives and time connectives

  • descriptive language

  • formal language

My end paragraph/conclusion:

  • draws the report together/sums up my main points

  • may give a personal opinion; ask the reader a question and/or tell the reader where further information may be found

  • write an interesting fact

INTRODUCTION

Why does the Moon look different every night? The Moon looks different every night because of the Moon’s orbit and the Sun’s reflection. The Moon goes through a cycle of phases and starts of with New Moon.

Moon’s Orbit

Can you believe that the Moon orbits the Earth while the Earth orbits the Sun, but there’s a slight problem. The Earth is tilted from the orbit of the sun. Some people believe that the shadows of the Moon are caused by the Earth’s shadows. However, the truth is that phases of the Moon are caused by the Sun’s reflection and the amount of the bright side that we can see as the Moon moves through its orbit.

Phases of the Moon

To begin with the Moon’s phases, it starts of with the New Moon then the waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent. Then the cycle will start over again. Sometimes you will see the last quarter on the other side, but that’s just apart of the Moon cycle.

How long does it take for the Moon to orbit Earth?

Approximately, it takes the Moon a period of 27.3 days to orbit. Did you know the Moon takes longer amount of days to return to the same point (celestial sphere), it takes 29.5 days to return! The reason why is because of the motion of the Earth around the Sun; this is called a synodic month.

Conclusion/Summary

Overall, now that you know a few facts about why the Moon changes their appearance every night. I hope you have enjoyed this, if you would like some more facts then go to this presention
(https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Dfo-dFUJZshUce6qmj8bQsSPRohW9WaPZkYuLvSgtQ/edit#slide=id.p) I hope you have enjoyed and if you would like to construct your own explanation good luck!

DEADLY MARS!

This week we have been learning about MARS! We have learnt a-lot. So I am posting this up to show all of my learning about Mars! I hope you learn fun facts! Down below is my report. (I have also made my writing colourful and checked it against the SC!)

Introduction:
Have you ever wondered about Mars’? Well if you are always wondering about the reddish orange Mars’. Then read on, this report will help you learn a decent amount of information about Mars’.

1st Paragraph: Surface features
Mars’ is a lifeless planet,it is harsh, rocky, red and the fourth planet in the solar system. Did you know that Mars’ is a continent that makes Mars’ have frozen polar caps and a canyon called Mariner Valley. Even though Mars is cold it has the biggest volcano in the universe called Olympus Mons and it is almost the same height as Mt Everest. If you were there your life would   be lifeless!

2nd Paragraph: Why people can’t live on Mars..
The reason why people can’t live on Mars, Mars’ atmosphere is thin that causes Mars to be cold. Mars’ temperature is 80.8 degrees and all of the water on Mars’ turns into ice. Most of all, Mars has storms that blows the sand everywhere and the storm could be on for months. Also one big thing is that Mars’ does  not have much water than on Earth. Oxygen is also required there  because there is probably 0.2% oxygen on Mars. There is also no magnetic field to block the harmful radiation. Screenshot 2015-05-20 at 9.56.44 AM.png   This is a photo of a robot on Mars!

3rd paragraph: Mars’  Moons
Phobos and Deimos is the names of Mars’ two moons. Phobos and Deimos are shaped like lumpy potatoes. One fact about Mars’ moons is that Mars’ moons were captured as asteroids! They were discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall. The moons were named after characters from Greek mythology and their father is Ares God of war! Therefore they have not been having a harmless life!

This is a photo of Mars’s moons!

The orbit of Mars!

Even though Mars is our closest neighbour, it’s orbit is very difficult. A day equals 24 hours and 37 minutes on Mars. This is because it spins slower than our planet. Moreover, a year on Mars is the same as 687 Earth days! Imagine if you lived on Mars, you would be almost half the age you were on Earth!
This is a photo is of Mars’ orbit!

Conclusion:

I gather you have learnt some facts about Mars? Well if you have and you still would like some more facts about Mars- http://www.planetsforkids.org/planet-mars.html. I hope you have enough ideas for your report!

ARB WALT: Missed Opportunities, Mmmm..MINE!

Hi guys,
This ARB is a little story. When I was working on this I was finding the missed opportunities. The reason why I was looking for the missed opportunities is because that is was our learning intention. Down below is my answers or my question from my teacher!

Describe what the fish is thinking about when he says, “Mine!”
I think the fish is thinking about the fly and saying in his mind, “ That fly is mine!”

b) Describe what the man is thinking about when he says, “Mine!”
The man might be thinking about the bear! Maybe because he

c) If there was one more picture added to continue the pattern of this story, what would it show?

I think it would be the cat saying GOT IT!

d) If you were giving this picture story another title which of the titles below would be the best one to use
          (highlight your answer)?
(A) Lunch
(B) Wild-life Adventure
(C) Lost Chances
(D) The Food Chain
